Why does my home smell like a burnt plastic/burnt wood smell?

Started smelling really awful about 7 this morning. Roommate thouht the house was on fire. We ran the heat last nite (31 degrees this morning) Smelled fine when I left at 6am. I have all the door to the rooms shut, just went into bathroom and the room smells of a strong burnt wood and plastic smell. The heating unit was turned off since early today however it was humming, now I turned the breaker off to it and its no longer humming.

Smell is still strong but only been approx 15 minutes.|||You didn't say what kind of heating system you have. If it is a forced air system, and the problem is with the central furnace, then the smell would be the same in every room if the furnace was the problem.

You indicate that the bathroom is where the smell is strongest. If the smell is strongest in one room, and the space heater is humming, it sounds like a problem with the fan motor system in the bathroom space heater.

Have this heater serviced or replaced. Do not try to operate it again. It sounds like a component inside has blown.|||Usually the heat turned on the first time makes the whole house stink. But if it smells like plastic burning there could be something wrong in ur duct work. U can remove the grill covers and look into them with a flashlight. Check the return also. I could be kids toy that fell into them. If u have checked all them, with nothing found. Call someone to check your unit. It may have a capacitors that has been shot. Make sure u tell them about the humming (it could be the unit cycling that ur hearing)- If your renting inform the landlord of the problem.|||Get a Heating/AC man man there quick!

it's either wire melting, of maybe a 'real fire'

about to happen!|||you need to get that looked at
