How can I make my bathroom odor free?

Hello! My husband and I live in an older apartment, and our bathroom doesn't have a vent or any air ventilation whatsoever. We have to keep the door closed when not in use (our cat unrolls all of the toilet paper, lol), but then when we open the door, the room smells heavily of mildew. Are there any creative ideas for getting rid of the bad smells? I'm a neat freak and am constantly cleaning, but it doesn't seem to help; neither do air fresheners or plug-ins. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks!|||if you are cleaning thouroghly with lysol or bleach, the mold is likely inside your walls or floor. If there was ever a water leak in the past, or currently, the wood inside your walls may be growing molds. Some molds can be highly hazardous to your health. If you can't get rid of the smell, you should address with your landlord asap. If landlord doesn't check out and get you an adequate solution, then you should report the problem to the health department. Additionally, you can get a portable dehumidifier which should remove any excess moisture in the room and help prevent the growth of molds and mildews, and filter other nasty bathroom smells - lol.|||I fully agree with Jane.A bathroom or any room for that matter, shouldn't smell like mildew or mold, even if it is old.You have some kind of a mold issue.If you are renting this apartment then your landlord is responsible for fixing this problem.If not then you should contact a company that specializes in water damage and repairs, so they can assess your problem.Mold and mildew can kill.If it doesn't make you sick it will at least ruin the walls beyond repair eventually.This can be a very serious issue that must be dealt with immediately.Skip the coverup it won't work.|||I saw a tall box type toilet paper holder that stores about three rolls plus has a roller for one to be in use, it rolls out of a slot that would keep it from being unravelled by the cat. After every shower, spray shower tiles and curtain/door with a solution of 2tsp tea tree oil (Wal-mart pharmacy) in 12oz water. Shake well. This will help prevent mildew from growing and kill any that has already begun to grow. If you don't start alllowing air into the room, you will start mold growing on everything including the ceiling. You can also try putting up a pet barrier in the doorway to discourage the cat from destroying stuff.|||Spray the walls and ceiling with vinegar and wipe it down.That will start the process of odor removal in there.Then turn on a fan and leave it in there til the vinegar dries.I pour vinegar down my drains every week.I live in a very old house and had that same problem.I just mist my shower and mop with it every nite.No more odor...Hope this helps.|||The best air freshner i have found is Ecosorb, my dad gets gallons from work, and puts them in little spray bottles, and in seconds it removes bad smells and keeps them away.|||Buy a air filter fan and use the charcoal pre-filter they come in many different sizes if not have an exhaust fan put it. It should be less then $100.00 for everything and I is cheaper then buying sprays|||try febreeze .Oder neutralizer . or clean with a bleach products.|||You could start with scented trash bags, which go a long way. lol


Otherwise, try using a fan, which will keep down on the moisture that is probably causing your mildew problem. If you have a window try leaving it open a few hours of the day. Keep all dirty (or wet) laundry out of the room, and buy an air freshner that automatically sprays every few seconds.


I feel your pain, our house was built in the '20s, and we have the same problem.
